Singapore - UOL's business courses continue to be popular

There are more than 10,000 students in Singapore studying for a University of London qualification through the University of London International Programmes. 5,200 new students joined the University of London International Programmes in Singapore during the 2011 intake - a 29 per cent increase from the previous year.

Professor Jonathan Kydd, Dean of University of London International Programmes, said the high student numbers were mainly due to the continued popularity of business and finance courses offered through the collaboration of University of London International Programmes with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). Computing courses, offered in collaboration with Goldsmiths, University of London, and law courses, developed by University of London Laws Consortium, are also increasingly in demand. He said: "I am delighted that Singaporeans continue to choose to study with us. This is testimony to the quality of a University of London degree, its relevance in Singapore and the region, and to the high quality teaching support available." Professor Kydd added: "A University of London qualification offers the reassurance of a high quality degree that provides the foundation for further study and for graduates' whole career."

In 2011, 2585 students from Singapore graduated with a variety of qualifications including in Accounting, Finance, Banking, Business, Economics, Computing, and Law. Yesterday, some of these joined graduates from around the world at the UK graduation ceremony, to celebrate their achievements.

Among them was Ursula Wiriadinata, born in Indonesia, who studied in Singapore for her BSc in Economics and Finance, and who subsequently won a scholarship to study an MSc in Finance and Economics at the LSE in the UK. She said: "The University of London International Programmes is globally recognised, and being a part of it has opened up opportunities for me to continue my studies in one of the world's best universities, which is LSE. I applied to several very good universities and all of them gave me offers. So you see how powerful the degree is."

Having a University of London degree, not only opens up further study opportunities, it also gives graduates a competitive edge in the job market as their qualifications are internationally recognised for their quality and standing. Chow Kin Keong, who graduated in Computing and Information Systems, explained: "Undertaking this degree sharpened my analytical mindset and also widened my problem-solving perspective. It took less than three months after graduating to land a job at a major US multinational technology and business services company."

Professionals are also choosing University of London degrees to enhance their skills.

Thomson Png, a banking executive, studied for a Bachelor of Laws degree part-time. He credits his studies with making him a better corporate manager as he could apply his enhanced analytical skills when making management decisions.
