Singapore - No more Apple deals at IT fair

Local Apple resellers have been advised to only sell its products at authorised stores and not at mega IT fairs.

Consumers looking forward to Apple deals at this week's IT fair may be disappointed as Singapore vendors will not be selling the popular iPads, iPhones, iPods and Macbooks bundled with freebies.

Local premium resellers have been advised by Apple Australia, which oversees the Singapore market, to sell the products only at approved stores. Doing otherwise is believed to be seen as diluting Apple's image, revealed a distributor.

This means the new move will extend to subsequent technology fairs such as the PC Show in June, Comex in September and Sitex in November.

Only telcos are not affected by the new ruling at such mega shows and potential customers can still get Apple products bundled with subscription plans.

The new move could potentially cause local resellers to lose millions in hardware business. More than 1,000 Mac computers can be sold at each IT fair which translates to losses of more than a million dollars in sales of Macs alone.

In attempt to manage this, resellers say that special deals for Apple products will still be made available at all their stores, reported The Straits Times.

Apple historically has strict guidelines in place for the marketing and sales of its goods. These guidelines have been enforced on local resellers ever since Apple Australia took charge of the Singapore market late last year.

This is despite Apple not having official stores here.

A spokesman from the company said that it does not comment on its business.

The IT Show will take place at the Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre from Thursday to Sunday. Opening hours are from noon to 9pm, and admission is free.
